I bought a 20 year old Palomino Quarter horse named ...

Sent to Pet Experts October 13, 2005 4:41 p.m.

I bought a 20 year old Palomino Quarter horse named Sonnie, he supposedly rode in past rose bowls more info on his term as a parade horse please. He has probably been in Southern Calif. his whole life. I live in Palm Springs and prior to that he was in Anza. He is a honey colored Palomino with two white socks on his hind feet - otherwise no other markings. His mane and tail are the same color as his coat. He stands about 17 hands.

Do you know if he is registered? as a Quarter Horse or Palamino? and what his registered name is? Many parade horses are Saddlebred crosses, which would explain his height (purebred QH and Palominos are very rarely 17 hands). Unless he is registered, or you know the name of the owner who rode him, this question may be unanswerable.

He is just an amazing horse and I was hoping to find out which years he was in the Rose Parade so I could do more research. He clearly has had excellent training, responds to leg, voice, rein at barely a touch. His ground manners are perfect. I think he may have been registered at one time but it appears that his papers are not available.

I believe he is registered but the papers are lost. I only know him by Sonnie. He has had great training, perfect ground manners he is just an amazing old guy. It is too bad his previous owners did not keep his records. I will remeasure him today and post a more accurate heigth.

Thanks

Thought you might be interested. One of the rules for equestrian units of the Rose Parade was that unless it was a costume "native" to the horse, all tack had to be silver. My grandfather's were around 150 - 170 pounds for the saddle, bridle, breastplate, not counting the rider. A picture of the type of saddles used at http://www.tom-stevens.com/Antique/4TedFlowers1.jpg
and an article by a Rose Parade rider about the special saddles used, at http://www.silvermag.com/b_saddles.htm

This does not answer my question. My question is the history of a Quarter/Saddlebred mix named Sonnie, Palomino currently 20 years old. I was hoping someone remembered him from the Rose Parades and had more info. I have learned that he did barrels at one time and that he was in the Rose Parade many times, I just don't know the dates.

Thanks

I'm sorry, but as I said before, unless you know his registered name, or you know the name of the owner who rode him, this question may be unanswerable.

Have you trid tracking back through the owner you bought him from?

Mary,

I do appreciate your efforts and realize i am probably grasping at straws. I have talked to the ex-husband of his previous owner and will speak to his former wife who bought him at age ten. Thanks again for your help.

This site shows a horse born in 1985
http://www.brookridgemorgans.com/glory.htm
called 99240 1985 S Palomino GOLDEN SONFIELD (out of SHAWALLA STORMY) and sired by a well known Rose Bowl parade horse (see site for more info)
The name Sonfeild seems to go with the stable name Sonny which is why I suggest it as a possibility. But that horse is listed as a stallion being used at stud. And of course its a morgan not a quarter horse. However it might be the site owner who did the article would have some clues for you as involved in the palomino's in the parade as they seem to be over a long period of time.
You might also see if anyone in this group The Rose Bowl Riders remembers your horse. This site has contact info
www.rosebowlriders.org/?goto=Home
You might also check with the mounted police who ride palominos in the parade
http://v6.pasadenastarnews.com/Stories/0,1413,206~26517~2595452,00.html
And you might go to the parade organizers to see if there is history of the riders in the years you think he may have been in the parade.
That would give you some directions to try anyhow.
Hope this helps you!
