Question

wont use leg after operation

Sent to Pet Experts June 30, 2005 2:23 p.m.

My yorki had a femoral head removal operation 2.5 weeks ago. He is using his leg when he walks very slowly (as in sniffing around), but picks it up when standing as well as when trotting or running. I put him in the tub to swim 3 times a week and do stretching exercises but I just can't get him to use the leg. Even tried capping his other feet but no luck. He developed very strong front legs and remainder hind leg. Can't afford therapy. What should I do? Am I expecting him to walk too soon? Can you recommend tricks to make him use his week leg?

Give him time to get used to using it again. Keep up the swim work.
If you are giving him attention when the leg is up try to stop doing that.
I had one dog that in her later years would still hold the 'poor little leg' up but would forget which one it was supposed to be - could all be a big play for attention!
Hope this helps you!
