Question

Possible swallowed toy.

Sent to Pet Experts April 11, 2005 7:58 p.m.

my 15 pound puppy may have swallowed a bell off of a cat toy yesterday. I’ve been watching stool, and have not seen it, and there is no straining or vomiting. The vet said it’s possible the jingle bell could hang out in his stomach which isn’t a problem unless it’s a toxic metal. Well how would I know! Wouldn’t most pet toys be non-toxic? I hate to pay for an x-ray when the darn thing might still be laying around the house somewhere!

REPLIED Check Mark

Most pet toys will be non toxic but not all.

You can wait to see if it comes out on its own but if you see ANY lethargy, vomiting or diarrhea, you need to see the vet immediately.  These are all signs of an obstructions.

Let me know if you have more questions.

The vet told me it should come out 24-36 hours. It's been almost 30 hours. Would you agree with the time frame? Is there anything that would make it pass easier (assuming it is even in there.) I don't want to give something that would cause a lot of discomfort when I don't know that it's even been swallowed. (A friend suggested butter, to lubricate things.)

Butter is not going to help move things along.  It will be absorbed and digested before it hits the digestive tract.

Since you don't know if he even ate it, I would wait until tomorrow and see what comes out.  If you see any of the signs mentioned above, see the vet immediately.
