Question

Roundworms

Sent to Pet Experts April 11, 2005 6:55 p.m.

I have a 2 month old Chihuahua puppy that we aquired from a very bad breeder. I figured that the puppy had worms and gave it pyrantel pamoate. The first time I noticed large worms being expelled from feces. Two weeks later I gave a second dose, about 1/4 teaspoon and didnt see any signs of Roundworms. Now just a week later I can visually see them in the anus area. I gave 1/2 teaspoon and next day saw about 20 rice grain size worms in bedding. Have not seen any in stool itself since first worming. Am I doing something wrong? What doseage should I be giving? I think it is 2.6 ml pyrantel pamoate

If the worms look like grains of rice, it's probably not roundworms.  It sounds more like tapeworms and they come from the puppy ingesting fleas.

The only way to get rid of tapeworms is to get a medication from your vet.  Just give them a call and describe the worm to them.  They will usually dispense it over the phone and let you come and pick it up.  The medication will be either Drontal Plus or Droncit.  One pill is all it takes and then the vet may have you repeat it later.

You will see them around the anus whenever there is an infestation whether you treat or not.  They will look like grains of white rice or they might look like sesame seeds if they have died.
