Sent to Pet Experts April 08, 2005 9:47 p.m.

our 2 female cockers 5 months old from same liter have started fighting with each other intensely for 10 seconds or so . our vet says its the two trying to figure out the dominate one . can you give us any help as to what we should or shouldnt do ? thanks Joe DeLario   we got them from a very good breeder at age 8weeks , they were and usually are okay with each playing ect. we started them sleeping in two crates last week (fighting was before that ) because there was growling going on when they both were in the same one . and we thought they needed some alone time. they are ok with it .one is jealous and wants to be by one of us alone if not she starts with the growling and could lead to fight. but they start to fight for no apparent reasons. Thanks Joe nad Lynn Delario

Any time that you have two females together, you will get some arguments.  They will, among themselves, finally decide who is the dominant one and the other will fall in line.  It takes a while for this to happen.

If you have not yet had them spayed, I suggest that you do so right away.  This will help to calm them down.  Women are called bitches for a reason.  There is nothing as hormonal as a bitch in heat.  They are very close to their first heat cycle so you want to do this soon.

You have done the right thing by putting them in separate crates.

You can help with the dominance issues by deferring to their judgement.  Be sure to feed the "alpha" first and pet that one first and let that one have your favors.  The other will notice and it will help to ease some of the confusion.

Let me know if you have more questions.
