Young Golden Retriever and Elevated Liver Enzyme

Sent to Pet Experts January 29 07:47 PM

My (almost) 2 year old golden retriever has an elevated count of liver enzyme (above normal). This elevated level of liver enzyme was discovered when he was 6 months old, during a routine blood work-up prior to his neutering operation. The vet gave him an antibiotic, which was effective in returning the count to normal. But a recent blood test (Dec. 2004) revealed that the liver count is elevated again. The vet has recommended that I proceed with doing a biopsy of the liver. (He already had an ultrasound which didn't show anything abnormal). Riley has neven shown signs of being sick -- no fatigue or vomitting or anything. He is an active dog. I do not have pet insurance and understand that a biopsy is quite expensive. What can you tell me about liver disease in such a young and vibrant dog? What are the symptoms and repercusions if I don't do anyting? What information can I expect if I do get the biopsy done, and do you recommend that I do it,or try something else?
Thank you, Kristin Crooks

If you don't mind...I would request the results of the bloodwork...and also ask if a bile acid test has been performed.

A biopsy, from your description, is not the first choice I would make.

If you get your results, please post them so that I may respond.
