We have a Yorkie...he is 2 1/2 yrs old. He is on ...

Sent to Pet Experts September 29, 2006 8:11 a.m.

We have a Yorkie...he is 2 1/2 yrs old. He is on sentinal pills for heart worm and fleas as recommended by our Vet. We were away for a couple of weeks, and he went to stay with our son's family at their home. They have a Yellow Lab. They said he and the lab picked up fleas. He has since been bathed about 3 times with medicated shampoo, but he continues to scratch, and bite himself. I have looked and looked but see absolutely no fleas or bugs of any kind on him. Actually his skin looked irratated and Iam using a medicated spray on him, and that looks better, but he continues the itching and biting. What is the problem and what is the solution?. Thank you so much for your help and advice. I have watched him itch so much that I think I am itching in sympathy for him.
Sincerely,
Nancy Francisco

was he fed anything different there or did he come in contact with lawn chemicals?

has he ever had any type of dermatitis in the past?

do you see raw spots or skin lesions on him now?

was he stressed by the other dog or your abscence?

His diet remained the same.
The only type of dermatitis he has had in the past was last year he got infected with fleas and we gave him the pill that killed them in 24hrs and then started him on Sentinal and he has been on it ever since year round.
I don't see any raw spots...but I do see some reddened areas like around his rectum and top of his back.
I don't believe he was stressed out by the family or other dog as they are here frequently and he knows the other dog and children very well.
He is very codependant on my husband and that may have stressed him for awhile, but they said he settled right down and was not a problem except for about 4 elimination accidents that he had.

Dear friend,

I think you are referring to Capstar as the oral pill to kill fleas - is that correct?

Yorkies have very sensitive skin. In addition, stress can cause cortesol to enter the bloodstream and interact with the histamine that is already being produced by an allergic reaction. It is also possible the dermatitis can turn bacterial. Frequent shampooing can actually make this reaction worse by leaving a resudue on the skin.

Use a natural, low lather, low irritant shampoo, wet your dog down thoroughly with lukewarm water, and apply the shampoo using your hands. Avoid getting water or shampoo in his eyes and ears, and lather all over, right down to his skin, then rinse thoroughly. Shampoo residue is a major cause of skin irritation for dogs. After rinsing, towel dry your dog, and avoid using any coat finishers or blow dryers, which can also cause skin irritation in a sensitive dog. I would also try an oatmeal shampoo which is very soothing. You can find it in a pet supply or:

www.revivalanimal.com

www.allergicpet.com

If you cannot resolve it with these maeasures, it is likely to be bacteria and will respond to an antibiotic. In sever cases a steroid is employed to reduce swelling or an antihistamine like bendryl at 0.5 to 1 mg of body weight but try the lowest dose first.

Please let me know how he is doing and if you still have any questions. I am happy to help in any way possible.

Very sincerely,

Terri

Terri...I accidentally hit the send button which sent the message again could you see that my account gets the $8.00 credit back. My balance should be $8.00. We will try the oatmeal bath and see what that does and your other suggestions too. We try to only shampoo Ben 1 time a week, but with the chewing and scrathing he gets to smelling pretty bad.
