Question

Benadryl for feline seizure as stop gap measure?

Sent to Pet Experts September 09, 2006 1:53 p.m.

Hi, I have a 15 yr old female spayed indoor cat with a history of hyperthyroidism. She has been on methimazole for 3 yrs(current dose 3/4's of a 5mg tab daily.) For about 2 yrs she has had a problem with intermittent diarrhea and vomitting. I would say she has very watery diarrhea 1-2 a week and vomits maybe once a week(sometimes partial hairballs but, more often than not just liquid or sometimes food.) Sometimes there is bright red blood in her stool and her vomit. She has been on prednisone for suspected IBD for about 2 yrs(1 tab 5m once daily). In January she had her first seizure and then two more over 4 months but, just last week had two more which were a bit more severe than the others. My vet has opted not to treat the seizures to date but, after last week, the first recourse she suggested was a $1500 MRI of my cat's brain. I cannot afford that and then she suggested Phenbarbitol but, I cannot get it until Monday(today is Sat.). Today my cat is very restless which she often gets before a seizure and I called a vet who is a friend and he suggested trying benadryl because it could also be feline vestibular syndrome but, it may help with the seizures.

What do you think about trying my 7lb elderly cat on 12.5 of benadryl for seizures?

I am also very concerned about diarrhea and vomitting which has never been truly dx'ed but, the blood bother me.
Thanks.
