Grooming problem
Sent to Pet Experts September 07 12:03 AM

We have two pet cats who are used to being both outside and inside cats. Our problem is that we live in an area where pine trees are plentiful and it is creating a mess of their coats. How do I get pine sap out of their fur without doing something toxic to them or shaving them? Is there a product I can use?

Optional Information:
Age: 10; Male; Breed: Cat/1shorthair & 1 Long hair

Already Tried:
brushing really hasn't done a thing. Cutting small lumps of fur carefully off of their coats. But Friskey, the large mostly white long haired cat has a very large patch on his left lower flank. The stickiness that hardens is very close to skin. Also is there anything that can be done to prevent this situation other than not allowing the cats outside??

The easiest way to get pine sap out of fur is to use oil - vegetable oil, mineral oil, peanutbutter, mayonnaise, mineral oil, petroleium jelly all can work.
You rub the oil into the sticky sap until its a really gooey mess. Then wash the cat with a cat safe mild shampoo to get the mess out of the coat. Sometimes you have to repeat in one area or another if there was a big amount of sap in that area.
Hope this helps you!
