Hamster health

Sent to Pet Experts September 02 02:34 AM

My hamster looked like she was about to die 6 days ago. She had lost most of her body weight and her respiratory rate was faster than I could count. Her weight loss happened very quickly. I have gone on line and found that the "tubes" she runs in may not be well ventilated. I also had changed the food that I buy. She was also located under an air-conditioning vent. I have bought the food she was used to, closed the vent, and removed the tubes and replaced them with a connecting room that is totally ventilated on top. She has gained weight and is breathing better. She is 2 years old. Can I be hopeful of a full recovery? What else should I do?

First of all, let me commend you on a job well done on researching and helping this little girl. :) Keeping her hydrated is very important for a full recovery. You can offer her a few drops of plain pedialyte with a dropper a few times per day to help with this. If she has any eye discharge or if she is wheezing at all, you may need to see a vet as it could have turned into an upper respiratory infection and she will need antibiotics to help clear it up. Depending on what kind of bedding you are using, try using a bedding called Carefresh bedding. Its natural and safe and can be found at your local pet super store. :) If she is eating properly and seems to be getting better day by day, you should expect a full recovery. :) Good luck :)
