Question

Lump on Right Shoulder

Sent to Pet Experts August 10, 2006 4:33 p.m.

My 11 month old toy poodle received her last rabies shot and an IV for spaying in her right shoulder area about five months ago. There was a palpable lump shortly after. Since then, the skin has become "hairless" and the lump is still present. The "hairless area is about 2 x 4.5 cms. The vet "thought" it might be an allergic reaction to the rabies shot. We've been put on a wait and see status. Any thoughts?

Thanks very much.
Kathy

REPLIED Check Mark

Hi Kathy,

Yes, it sounds as though you are on track with the allergic reaction to the rabies shot and a hematoma developed thereafter and then became scar tissue.

You shouldn't have anything to worry about unless you see a major change on the area.

I hope this helps. If you need further information please feel free to contact me.

Thank you Tammy for your prompt response. Quick question...what constitutes a change? A larger hairless area or changes in the size of the lump?

Kathi,

If it becomes larger or the tissue looks "reddish" or inflamed.

I don't think this is going to ever be a factor, but just wanted you to be aware if it does have a major change that seems unnormal, to seek vet care.

It was nice working with you. Anytime, just ask for (justasktammy1) and I will be glad to help you with any of your pet questions.
