Question

new quinea pigs

Sent to Pet Experts July 31, 2006 12:19 a.m.

I recently purchased a guinea pig a female. and it wasnt eating or drinking well. I called the store that I got it from and they offer a 14 day garuntee so they said that they would have a vet look at her.

They also said that she shared a cage with 2 other females and was closer to one of them than the other. So today I went and purchased her good freind in my efforts to make her feel more at home. I got them a 40 inch cage.

The one that I had before keeps scratching is that normal. Also they keep squeeking at each other and it looked like the one that I have had for a couple of days bit the other one witch the new one is a little more hyper. I am confused because they were in the same cage together for so long are they fighting or what. Please help I am veary confused.

I think that the pet store pulled on your heart a little. I would recommend that you have the one checked by a vet to make sure she is healthy. Make sure that you give them the correct food, they need plenty of timothy hay to eat. Stay away from pellets that have seeds and fruits in them. The hay is very important for their intestinal tract. It will keep everything moving thru. You should also add 1 Vitamin C tablet 500mg crushed and dissolved into a liter of water for drinking water for them each day. They don't produce their own and have to be supplemented daily. I would also make sure that they are both females, the unexpected has been known to happen. As far as then scratching goes they should be checked for mites, it is not uncommon for them to come with them from the pet stores. They may have not actually been housed together for any length of time before you came to purchase the first one. You may need to seperate them initially until they get used to each other. You can place piece of chicken wire in the middle of the cage and give them seperate spaces while still allowing them some contact. You wold need to provide seperate bowls and boxes for them for the time being.

As I recommended it would be best to place something in between them for the time being. They could very well be fighting or trying to establish the pecking order. The scratching is not normal. Again this may be mites which need to be treated before they spread and create hair loss and sores. I'm sorry for the misunderstanding.
