Chronic vomiting.
Sent to Pet Experts July 29 03:48 PM

My 9 year old cat, Sadie, has had chronic vomiting for several months now (but she has always had a sensitive stomach). I found that feeding her only moist cat food has reduced the frequency of vomiting over the last several months. However, she recently began vomiting up to four times a week, sometimes 10 minutes after eating, sometimes several hours after eating. There are no signs of hairballs in the vomit. She has a healthy appetite and there has been no weight loss. She shows no signs of diahreah or constipation or any pain or discomfort.

Should I try a high fiber diet to see if that helps? If so, what would be a good kind of food to try?

Optional Information:
Age: 9; Female; Breed: Cat

Hi again Customer (name blocked for privacy), That actually helps a whole lot. A lot of cats have very sensitive stomachs by nature. Diet is one of the most important aspects of keeping any animal healthy. (Including ourselves). Many of the ingredients in fancy feast are hard to digest at best. Yellow corn is one of the most obvious of these ingredients. If you've ever changed a baby's diaper you know what I mean. There are many different varieties you can switch to that would be much better for your cat. Good rule of thumb is that if you can buy it at the grocery store, it's not a very healthy food. Nutro has a fantastic line of indoor foods to choose from as does Proplan and Natural Balance. Although Nutro is exclusively what I feed to the three cats that I belong to. "Nutro Natural Choice Complete Care Indoor Senior" is the exact food I'd recommend. It doesn't just have high levels of fiber for digestion, it has optimal levels of usable fiber. Nutro is also guaranteed to improve skin and coat over any other brand of food. Most of the premium foods are available in cans and pouches for easy feeding. You might also want to consider switching to a dry food for at least some of the feedings. If you feed a premium dry food the occurance of dental problems and vomiting will surely both decrease. If she doesn't take to the dry food, try mixing in a tablespoon or two of water. The water will help to bring out some of the flavors and might make it more palatable. At nine years old it's very important to maintain a proper diet and I think you're on the right track. If you have any other questions please feel free to ask. The vomiting might continue for a few days while the cat is getting used to the new food. There is not really any need to transition slowly because the current food is causing problems so I would get off of that soon. Most pet specialty stores sell all of the foods I've mentioned. If the vomiting continues for more than a week after changing foods or if any other symptoms show up then I would check with your vet to run some blood work and check a stool sample.
