Question

my kitty pees outside her box

Sent to Pet Experts July 28, 2006 2:41 p.m.

My 2 year old female kitty has started peeing outside the litter box on a regular bases. This started happening after we moved into a new apartment. She has moved with me several times and this didn't happen then. When I find a pee spot, I rub her nose in it, tell her sternly NO, NO, and then place her in the litter box. My fiance does the same if he finds it first. We the spray the spot very very well with pet enzyme spray. She not always peeing in the same spot, but it's usually on one of the couches or in a pile of clothes or towels or, whatever she can pile up. My fiance and I don't know what else to do, she starting to do this everyday. She only does it when we're not home or asleep. If we don't get this fixed soon, my fiance wants me to get rid her. What can I do?! I love my kitty like she my kid. PLEASE HELP!!!!!

The first thing that you need to do is see the vet to rule out a medical problem. Any time that our cats have litter box issues, this is our first place to look. This is most often caused by a urinary tract infection or crystals (or stones) in the urine. These issues CAN be brought on by stress, as in the stress caused by a move.

If the cat feels pain every time that she enters the litter box, she will stop going in it at all, even for BM's.

If she's peeing in inappropriate places, you can try a product called Feliway. It contains cat hormones and will deter inappropriate soiling. Use it all the places where she inappropriately soils to deter her from peeing there in the future.

You need to see the vet as soon as you can for a urine culture and to get a diagnosis and start treatment.

Let me know if you have more questions.
