Question

Boxer health issues

Sent to Pet Experts July 27, 2006 12:43 p.m.

My son and daughter-in-law recently lost their Boxer, Snoop (He was 9 years old) to an unexplained problem. Now their other Boxer, Eve,(she is 5 years old) is having serious health issues too. She has lost over 10 pounds due to her inability to swallow. In other words, she cannot eat or drink by herself. She will try drinking but it seems as if the muscle in her throat will not force the water or food into her stomach. What could be the cause of this problem?

Optional Information:
Age: 5; Female; Breed: Boxer

Already Tried:
She has been run through a series of tests at her vet.

Hello and thanks for researching this very important question!

The inability to swallow can be caused by a number of neurologic problems. These conditions can be immune-mediated, or infective in origin, or involve degenerative changes that originate in muscles and nerves themselves.

***I do strongly suggest that this dear pet be examined by a licensed Veterinary Neurologist so that a more direct examination and analysis of this situation can be performed as soon as possible.***

In the meantime, if this pet can swallow any liquids, you can try the liquid food Canine Clincare, or the paste food Nutrical to keep his calories and nutrients up. These can be fed a small bit at a time with the head in an upward position to facilitate swallowing...take care to not cause choking:
