Question

Feline coughing

Sent to Pet Experts July 08, 2006 12:23 p.m.

I have a cat that is 3 years old, nuetered, free from all of the feline diseases and stays indoors. My cat has a horrible cough that is sometimes dry and sometimes loose. The cough started about 18 months ago and has become worse. After a coughing episode he has very labored breathing, almost like an asthma attack. The changes I have made so far are changing the kitty litter to all natural pine, changing the food to organic only. I have also been giving him a homeopathic detoxifier as well as a homeopathic cough-asthma drops which helps him get his breathing back to normal. I live in Arizona, so I thought this might be valley fever, although I don't know if animals can get it. I look forward to hearing from you.

Hello:

You haven't mentioned in your post, anything about hairballs. This is the first thing I would look into according to the symptoms you have provided for your cat.

Because of their very clean nature, cats are grooming themselves continually. The result is hairballs. Hairballs that are left untreated can lead to death due to blockages in the intestines or esophagus. The cough that occurs with hairballs will make you think that your cat is dying then and there. It will begin gradually and elevate with the passage of time.

You can purchase hairball remedies at your local pet store or at large discount stores in their animal department. I would try this first. If he shows no improvement over the next week I would recommend taking him in to the vet to look for the underlying cause. If during this time his condition becomes worse, I would take him as soon as possible.

Hi Steph:

With all of the home remedies you have tried, it would be in the best interest of your little guy to see his vet. He could have allergies that are causing what he is experiencing or he could in fact be asthmatic and need to be placed on medication for either of these.

He could also have a tumor that is growing or a hernia that is creating a blockage in his bronchial tubes.

The problem is, only an examination from your vet (and potential allergy testing) will provide the answer for this. I would get him in as soon as possible. Labored breathing can cause excessive strain on the heart and brain due to low intake of oxygen.
