Reply to Danielle's Post: not sneezing or breathing hard , bedding is Healthy Pet made from virgin wood pulp. got her at a pet store. since it is only one eye I and no other symptoms.I think it may be an eye infection.
Do I need to worry about my 6 year old daughter cathing an eye infection ? If it is an eye infection what type of eye drops could I use on the guinea pig?

You are correct about it being an eye infection, as that definitely sounds like what it is. I asked about the sneezing and difficulty breathing because guinea pigs are notorious for getting upper respiratory infections. Guinea pigs bought from pet stores more times than not come home with a URI, due to the cramped living conditions and lack of ventilation that are a part of pet store animal units. However, she doesn't sound like she has URI.

If it is an eye infection, she really does need to see a veterinarian. She will need to be put on a antibiotic eye drop to help clear up the infection. Over the counter eye drops will do nothing for the infection. Human eye drops can also be harmful to guinea pigs; only a few are safe for guinea pig use.

If she has an eye infection, she cannot pass it on to your daughter. However, make sure your daughter and you wash your hands after handling the guinea pig.

Hope this helps!
