Question

Bladder problem or behavior problem

Sent to Pet Experts June 27, 2006 9:44 p.m.

I have a 10 +/- nuetered black (boy) cat. He has always been a little naughty about going "potty" in places that he should not go. More recently he has become down right bad, it appeared that he refuses to use the litter box ( I have two in different locations but rather close to each other as there are two other kitties as well, they have always lived together) After trying different litter just about all that is on the market, I thought maybe he was trying to tell me that something was medically wrong, so I took him to our Vet., who took a culture of his bladder and determined that he has inflamation and precscribed pregnazone (spelling ?), it seemed like it was working and we have been on this for about 2 and half weeks, well again he is not using the litter boxes and urinates on the carpet or anything else except where he should go. Do we have an underlying medical problem that should be looked at more closely or could my little evil kitty be demonstrating bad behavior? They all eat science diet with the low mag. as they are all boy cats. Please help!

This sounds like you may need to continue with the medications a little longer. It is not unusual for this to take 3 to 4 weeks to clear up. He may also need to be put on a different type of diet that is more specific to urinary problems. Also since he has already been going in inappropriate places, those areas need to be thouroughly cleaned and if possible something put over them that will keep him from going back to that spot if he is returning to them over and over again.

what would you suggest for a diet? I do clean these areas all the time, I have tried to used the products that claim discourages the pet from returning, I must still be doing something wrong. I am ok to allow the longer time on the meds I love him enough I guess to be putting up with this on an almost daily situation, again, what do you suggest I cover the area(s) with?

You may need to get on a prescription diet like the Hills C/D which is the most commonly used diet for urinary problems. Putting plants or coffee tables over the areas where he can't get to them may discourage him from those areas. Another thing that may help is using catnip in the litter box. It may attract him to it more often if he feels the need to go more, give him a direction to head. Unfortunately getting the smell out is difficult, last resort would be to pull the carpet if that is where he is going.
