Help my JR
Sent to Pet Experts June 26 04:02 PM

I have a 5 year old female JR. Mako was boarded 2 weeks ago for 2 days and has nearly lost her voice due to excessive barking. This normally happens to a much lesser extent when she goes to day care while I'm out of town. She was seen 9 days ago by our local Vet, for routine exam including blood sample, bordetella, heartworm, lyme etc..
Banfield Vet service only recommended a harness to reduce strain to her throat during that visit. Mako is never on a leash however. Has my dog lost her voice? Can it be permanant? What can be done? Unfortunately, we need to board her again in 2 days. Thank you. Ken Meyer

Optional Information:
Age: 5; Female; Breed: Jack Russell

Already Tried:
routine Vet visit with little or no consern relative to her near loss of voice

Dear Ken,

This is most likely not permanent but the result of laryngitis like you would get if you scream at a ball game. However, Mako is experiencing a great deal of stress from being boarded and stress CAN lead to illness. If there is any possibility of leaving her home with a pet sitter - that would really be much better for her.

In the meantime give her a vitamin suppliment containing Omega 3 fatty acids and put a feww drops of fish oil on her food daily as that will soothe her throat.

BYW: we have a male jack in the family(Cowboy) aren't they great little dogs?

Please let me know if you have any more questions. I will be happy to help.

Warmest best wishes,

Terri

Reply to Terri Riba's Post: Yes they are lovely dogs Terri, family members.
Is the vitamin supplement you refer to a liquid?
Can Mako use my "human fish oil" pill?

Thank you!

You are very welcome Ken. Yes - you can certainly use your fish oil pills - just a few drops on Mako's food daily should do it. And the vitamin suppliment (available at pet supplies) is a liquid.

Our jack is black and white - he looks like a cow and he is a boy - hence "Cowboy" LOL
They sure are animated, friendly, intelligent little family members.

Best of luck to you and Mako,

Terri
