Our white lab swims in the pool all day long, all year long. He will sit on the ledge and play for 30 minutes at a time and other times he will swim in circles for 15 to 30 minutes at a time. He also drinks the water. I suspect this is not good for his coat or system. If so, how is it not good and what are the alternatives to treating our pool, as fencing our pool is not an option.

Reply to Terri Riba's Post: We thave our pool treated regularly by a service. I do not know how much chlorine is used. He does not have diarrhea or skin lesions, but we did have to cut some of his hind fur recently due to what we think was mold mold growing due to the fact that his fur never really dried out. It hasn't happened again since it is very hot now where we live.

Dear friend,

Perhaps you are in Florida like me! Labs LOVE to swim and there is nothing wrong with him doing this. However, it would be a good idea to rinse his fur with the hose and plain water and blow dry him before he comes in at night. If he continues to develope mold he can become very ill from that. He can develope fungal diseases and ringworm. His coat can start to suffer as well. Give him a vitamin suppliment containing omega 3 fatty acids every day and also put a few drops of fish oil in his food daily. You can keep his pants hair trimmed as well as the fur between his pads as foot fungus is very common in warm climates when the pet is always exposed to dampness.Make sure the pools PH is always properly balance so bacteria will not grow because he can develope severe digestive upsets from that.

Please let me know if you have any more questions. I will be happy to help.

Very sincerely,

Terri
