Question

Pet sitting for a friend for 5 days

Sent to Pet Experts June 17, 2006 9:44 p.m.

I am pet sitting a 6 month old besingi (sp?). She is a wonderful dog, however, she is going nuts at my home. She has been here on several occasions, but her mom has always been with her. I put her in her crate when I am gone (at the request of her mom), and when I feed her. I just got her out of the crate for a feeding, and she peed all over the crate and herself. She was only in there for 15 minutes or so, and she was extremely upset. I know that this is a new experience for her, but I am wondering what I am going to do for the next four days. Any advice?

Age: <1; Female; Breed: besingi

Does she seem really anxious and nervous? And did you feed her before taking her out or after?

Thank you for your reply. She plays really well with my papillion; however, when they aren't playing, she is darting around like she is looking for something. I don't know if this is the breed tho', since she seems to do this at her home as well. As for taking her out, I took her out a few hours (2) before I fed her, and then again right after she ate. She peed and pooped the first time and then peed again the second time. Hope this helps.

It does sound like she tends to be on the nervous side normally if she does this even at home. And the crate may cause for more nervousness as well. If she is getting along with your papillion then she should calm down by tomorrow once she has spent the first night with you and gotten more used to you and the surroundings. I would see how she does tomorrow, make it a point to take her out first thing in the morning and regularly as she may have less ability to hold her urine as your dog does and the nervousness only adds to less ability to hold her urine. She most likely is darting around looking for her owner as she is used to being with them but I don't think you will go through this the whole time but maybe the first 24 hours she will be pretty nervous. I would continue with what you are doing since it has only been a couple of hours and feel by tomorrow evening she will have calmed down alot. Yes that extra information helped and you are so very welcome.

Thank you very much for your help. This morning, I took her out (along with my dogs first and then by herself) out to potty. She didn't the entire time; however, once we came in and I put the dogs in their crates to eat, she immediately peed. Thank you again for your help. I guess first and foremost, she just isn't trained.

Yes she must not be or she has been trained to use the crate for her urination so ai would contact your friend and ask her if she has been trained becuase it does not sounds like she is. The only think you are going to be able to do is to continue to work with her on a daily basis and maybe get her started on the training of going outside. Take her out several times a day and reward her for being good so she will come to understand that this is the correct behavior. When she is bad then take away her toys and treats so she learns that bad behavior does not get rewarded.
