Question

iris cysts

Sent to Pet Experts June 17, 2006 6:21 p.m.

My golden retriever, maile 5.5 years old was just diagnosed with iris cysts. I'd never heard of them, but apparantly they do run in the breed. Where can I get complete information on this problem? GRCA has nothing and I am not familiar with the various veterinary web sites. Thanks Jeanette

Hello and thanks for this question about your pet's health.

Cysts of the iris do occur commonly in Goldens, and can be of little consequence if small:

Treatment depends on whether or not the eyes seem to be at any immediate danger of having the field of vision impaired (by multiple cysts, and/or ruptures):

***If your pet has not been examined by a Veterinary Ophthamologist, then I do recommend this to be sure that there is not another explaination for the spots seen on the eye...some malignancies can mimic the appearance of these cysts. A specialist would also be able to tell you, based on their experience with this condition and in this breed, what treatment(s) may be necessary and what prognosis exists for the future.***
