Question

English Cocker, 3 years old, spayed female, runt of the litter.

Sent to Pet Experts June 11, 2006 2:32 p.m.

Our english cocker has always been picky about its water supply. However now it will not drink water unless it is running directing out of a hydrant or water hose. It refuses to drink from a bowl. We have tried soft and hard water makes no difference.   She is currently at our vet hooked up to an IV as she is severely dehydranted due to the kennel (where we had her while on vacation) not catering to her needs.   I can't understand why she would allow herself to dehydrate when fresh water has always been available to her.

Her diet consists of a prescribed can dog food available only thru our vet plus occasional table scraps.

Any ideas or thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Jim Dicks

Optional Information:
Age: 3; Female; Breed: English Cocker

This is the second time this has happened in the past 3 months. The first time our vet ran all sorts of tests....nothing but dehydration appears wrong. We water her from a hydrant three times a day. We both work during the day and she is kept in her own inside/outside kennel along with our two other dogs (poodle, collie). We try to excise them nightly and the cocker is a lap dog to my wife in the evenings. We were considering giving her to our mother in law since she is home all day. But hate for her to get attached to this dog if its fate is doomed.

This is quite interesting and I cannot think of any medical reason for it. I do have a suggestion though. Have you tried the pet water fountains that constantly run? I can send you a link if you would like for me to. You could get one of those for inside the house and then your could get the drip spout that hooks to a faucet for outside and maybe she could learn to use it if she likes it since she is so funny about what she drinks from.
