My 9 yr old Miniature Dachshund (10 lbs) has ...

Sent to Pet Experts May 27, 2006 11:05 a.m.

My 9 yr old Miniature Dachshund (10 lbs) has separation anxiety, the vet did blood work, all OK, then prescribed Valium 5mg to be given 1 hr before we leave. On the 3rd day, that night she had diarrhea and had uncontrolled urine accidents. On the 3rd am she had a normal 1st urine and soft, but very formed stool, then 3 hrs later a very bloody urine. She only had 2 doses of Valium, we did not give her after the second because her behavior was "drugged out". Would the Valium irritate her bladder? Thank you for replying. Vanessa

Hi Vanessa, Sorry about your little one's troubles!

Valium (brand name diazepam) is a powerful muscle relaxant. Although your veterinarian prescribed a dose right in the middle of the recommended range for dogs, your pet may be having trouble with the MUSCLE RELAXANT properties of this medication. Some pets do, some do not.

You were right to discontinue the dosing.

***Do call your veterinarian and discuss this with your dog's doctor so that you can find a new plan of action.***

Will her bloody urine diminish also?

I would like to see your vet perform a urinalysis for you, if possible today, to be sure that something else is not happening coincidentally (like a bladder infection, kidney infection, etc)...your little girl is middle-aged and it's best to be on the side of caution with this symptom, instead of just assuming that she's stressing herself out!

Also, do check around the house...dogs with anxiety disorders also display symptoms such as chewing inappropriate things...we would like to rule out any ingestion of a toxin in the past few days.

***Because your vet has seen her and knows her medical history, I feel best recommending a call to them today to get a sense of what urgency they assign to this...IF THIS WERE MY DOG (and I've been in your shoes!--I've done rescue work with Lhasa Apsos for 15 years...anxiety disorders are really very complex, so don't be too hard on yourselves): I would call the vet today.***
