I have twp pet raccoons. they have had their shots. My one yr. old has matted fur on top of her butt, now she is losing the fur. It looks like she had a close shave. Is this normal, could she be chewing the matted fur off? she should and does have a clean bill of health. she has been spayed and teeth filed down, and declawed along with shots.I worry about the loss of fur

Once a year a raccoon's fur will matt and winter fur will come out in clumps. This is a normal process for most, if not all raccoons.

The fur becomes a tangled mess. You can comb matted fur gently with a brush or wire comb. The area can be washed using a soap free shampoo, if it seems unsanitary but raccoons should be completely bathed only once or twice in a year. Provide lots of water and feed fresh fruits, vegetables, chicken, turkey and fish but NOT Red meat. A high protein poultry based dog food can be used; verify it is low or no "ash".

Very best of luck to you all.
