I don't think I would be too hasty on the putting it down suggestion. While New Duck Syndrome can be very serious I'm not convinced that is what is going in with your duck. New Duck Syndrome can be either an acute or chronic septicemic disease caused by
Pasteurella, or
Moraxella. It affects ducks of any age, sometimes turkeys, and may sometimes affect chickens, game birds and wild waterfowl. Mortality is 2–75% in young ducks. Transmission is mainly direct, bird-to-bird, via toenail scratches, especially of the duckling foot, or through respiratory epithelium during respiratory disease. It can also be by fecal contamination of feed, water or the environment where survival of the infectious agent may be prolonged. Adverse environmental conditions and pre-existing disease are predisposing factors. The symptoms are as follows:
- Weakness.
- Neck tucked in.
- Head/neck tremor.
- Ataxia.
- Disinclined to walk.
- Incoordination.
- Dysponea.
- Ocular and/or nasal discharge.
- Hyperexcitability
A nasal discharge is not the same thing as bleeding from the nostril. If it is bleeding from the nose, I would suspect some type of injury or squabble with another duck or some other pet maybe. If it is bleeding heavily, then you do need a vet to take a look at it pretty quickly. If the bleeding has stopped by now or if it is very minor, I would observe for a couple days, watching for any of these symptoms. If you see any of them, then you definitely want to get a vet involved as it may be spreading. If you see none of these symptoms, I'd assume the injury scenario and keep a close eye on him for awhile. I hope this has been a bit more helpful to you. Patricia
