I have a fifteen year old lab. He is in some pain becuase of his hind legs. He has what appear to be great big lumps on his joints. He cries but the doctor recently gave us some pain med for him. It seems to be helping some. He will not let anyone look at his legs and won't let the vet near him. We had to sedate him for his yearly shots and he came out of sedation for that and tried to bite the doc. Please tell me do vets make house calls? Is there anything to do for the lumps?

I would suggest for the next vet visit that you have the vet give you some meds for the dog so he will be far less stressed when you bring him in. They can probably also loan you a muzzle to put on him before he goes in the door. I know my vet goes out to people's cars at his clinic for exceptionally scared or in pain dogs and gives the dog a shot of tranquilizer to let the dog be less stressed for the visit.
I think you should have the vet x-ray those hips and a mobile vet may not be able to do that.
The lumps may be indication of arthritis or just might be his hip bones showing as he's had some muscle loss in the area due to the pain in the joints.
You can see if glucosamine chondroitine in addition to the pain meds will help. If he was more pleasant I'd suggest a chiropractor or accupuncture but I don't think the dog would stand for that.
I can tell you a heated pet bed even in summer is something my elderly arthritic animals really like to use. www.petedge.com carries them among other places.
Hope this helps you!
