Sent to Pet Experts May 09 11:54 AM

What do you do if your pet is not eating much very little at all BUT mostly drinking water and she has been able to urinate very often BUT she can't seem to poop? We tried giv ing her meds from the petstore to help regulate her BUT she just throws them up and she did throw up a couple of times last week. She doesnt appear to have a temperature BUT she also doesnt have as much energy as she used to either just recently. What could be the problem?

Optional Information:
Age: 4; Female; Breed: Toy Fox Terrier

Already Tried:
Tried changing her food she was eating meats (ham, steak, chicken etc) that is her normal diet just table food. BUT, since she has been sick we have been trying wet food and dry dog food. She does eat a little BUT has eaten only maybe 4 times in the past week which is NOT normal for her at all she will not even touch her dog treats. We also got her some medicine last night at the petstore to regulate her BUT she just throws it up.

You need to add some pumpkin to her food as this is very faverable for them and it will also help to regulate her as well. If she has an empty stomach then the medication that you are giving her could be causing an upset stomach. I would recommend a bland diet of cooked rice and/or boiled chicken or beef which is more tolerable to the stomach. Dietary intolerances can also cause stomach upset so it may take working with her to find a compatable diet for her. But try the bland diet and the pumpkin added as this will help to coat her stomach and regulate her stools as well as she could be constipated and pumpkin can help greatly with this.

Reply to Cheryl K.'s Post: If the pumpkin doesnt work what should we do for her? Because she usually loves every kind of food we have ever given her in the past and she wont even eat her favorites. BUT we are willing to try the pumpkin tonight IF it doesnt work though what should we try next?

Some will and also you can apply at www.carecredit.com to see if you qualify for their payment plan. This will pay the veterinarian bill and then you make payments to them. I think this would be a good option for you.

They may give you a lower credit amount but I have seen some with bad credit get approved through this company. You will need to have the name, address, and phone number of the veterinarian you will be using when you fill out the online application and they usually give an answer within 90 minutes, most cases sooner. Reply to Cheryl K.'s Post: My bf took the dog to the vet for a check up. They would not do any tests unless he paid for them up front. He wont have the money until Thurs to do anything further with her. The vet said she does not have a blockage because he put a glove on and put his finger up there he said the feces is soft and not hard. It did have hair in the feces that he did pull out (vet said thats from her licking herself most likely). He gave her a laxative and she ended up throwing that up. We did give her an enema last night and she finally was able to go to the bathroom. She drank water last night and tonight and each time she did she threw up. Its apparent she has an upset stomach since she is throwing things up. We cant get any medicine down her as she just throws it up again thats why we had to give her the enema last night to get her to potty. She still just pees but will not poop. Plus she hasnt eaten I would say in probably 5 days now last time she did try to eat. Any ideas on what could be wrong with her? Do you think it could be psychological?

No this does not seem physcological. I would try feeding her a bland diet of cooked rice and/or boiled chicken or beef as this is more tolerable to the stomach. It sounds as though she does not want to eat since her stomach is upset and therefore is not intaking enough food to be able to produce waste. You need to keep fluids in her to keep her from becoming dehydrated as well, but try the bland diet and see if this helps, also a spoonful of pumpkin in her meals will help her bowel movements to become more regular also.

Reply to Cheryl K.'s Post: We have tried everything in terms of trying to get her to eat. She is not willing to eat anything. She drinks water, pees and throws up. That is basically all she does. We are going to try Peptobismol tonight as you suggested before. BUT, more than likely she will throw it up for some reason she is unable to keep any form of medicine now thats why we had to use an Enema on her the other day to get her to go potty (poop). Any other suggestions on what is wrong with her? Or what to do for her? The dr said he could take blood tests BUT it may or may not show anything. Is there anything else we should have him try when my bf finally does get her back to the vet again on Thursday?

You do need to get some food into her, if it were me I would use a syringe and try to get some warm chicken broth into her. It would be unlikely that it is psycological unless something has happened to cause such stress to stop her from wanting to eat. I agree the blood tests may show something but then again they might not. It could be a case of acid reflux or an intestional tract disorder if she is not able to keep anything down and the vet says she does not have a blockage and try just hald a teaspoon of pepto-bismol to start since she is having problems keeping medicine down. I think one of the main reasons she is not having bowel movements is due to the fact that she is not eating and therefore is unable to produce a bowel movement as her body is using up what she is intaking leaving no waste. Also try a spoonful of the pumpkin as they love the taste and she might be willing to eat this. If she has gone this long without eating she will most likely need some IV fluids

Reply to Cheryl K.'s Post: Ok we tried chicken broth and she throws it up and she drinks water and throws it up she is not able to keep anything down long enough for us to give her medicine and if we give her medicine it just comes back up. My bf does not have the money to get her into a vet until Thursday when he gets paid. She is a 4 year old Toy Fox Terrier she did weigh 14 lbs and now since she has been sick was down to 11 lbs last Friday when she saw the vet the first time. How long can she go like this before something bad happens?
