This is not a pet question but I have been unable to find an answer anywhere else. I recently opened a chicken egg, bought at a local grocery store, and found a foreign body inside with the yolk. It was grey and about the size of a large kidney bean and fairly firm. Any idea what this was? Possibly a failed second yolk sac? Thanks for your attention to this bizarre event.

It's possible. I raise chickens so am pretty familiar with what goes on inside the eggs. Grocery store eggs are not fertile (the hens are housed separate from the males) so there is no chance that this is a baby chick in the shell UNLESS this was a farm fresh egg. If that's the case, the egg may have been fertile and you may have seen an embryo.

Aside from that, this could be a double yolk, bacteria in the shell or another anomoly.

Let me know if you want to discuss this more.

Reply to Tammy Falkner's Post: If I would find one of these again, is the egg safe to use? I discarded this one. I have seen chick embryos before, having been raised on a farm but this was very different. Thanks for your help

No. It's not safe to use. Any time that you see something like this, you should just discard it.
