Goldfish

We have 4 goldfish in a 10 gallon tank, what other kind of fish can we put with them? My boyfriend and I were at Petsmart and wanted to get a betta but was told we couldn't but the betta with them and was told that only goldfish can go together that goldfish can't go with other fish is that generally true????
