How do you know if your pet is sorry?

My dog got out of the yard and i had to retreive him and then punish as well. and he was sitting on the floor glancing at me everyonce in a while so i put him in my lap now he glances at me and he's very tired and its obvious but he wont lay down in my lap. is he angry or sorry?
