Question

Ear Infection

Sent to Pet Experts July 06, 2004 9:55 a.m.

My 8 year old beagle has ear infections all the time. I have given up on the vet. They say it is a yeast infection. We have gone thru so many different kinds of antibiotics and washes. You can hear the fluid.I think my other beagle is giving it to her when he is contantly licking her ears. Someone suggested to give Dimetap chewables for children. What should I do?

The big question is, is it only your dogs ears or does he have all over allergy problems. Some pet owners tend to blame their vet when they can't get a problem under control but sometimes dogs just have constant ear problems. Mine did and I 've been a vet tech for over 20 years. You other dog licking is keeping the area moist which is the perfect environment for yeast. Its also nice and smelly because of the yeast infection so he will continue to lick until its cleared up and maybe even after. I realize that this will be hard to stop but it is a vicious cycle that will continue until you get it completely cleared up. Continuing on the medication for 2 weeks and also keeping the licking down to a minimum with doing just regular cleaning with a mild ear cleanser that has a drying agent in it at least once a day..(if you treat the ears with the medication in the morning and evening, do the cleaning at noon)

Good Luck!

It is a yeast infection. She has been tested everytime we visit the vet. Is there something that I can purchase over the counter? We have gone thru several different antibiotics and drops. I do use a drying wash for her ears. I started to put viniger around her ear to keep the other dog away from her. She has a smelly, reddis and brown disharge, and she rubs her ear on the floor and you hear it. I need help!
