Re: Westie, 3 years old newly diag. of Addisons.
Tx: IM Percorten V q/28 days, daily pred. - approx. 2.5mg
Ques.: I'm looking for alternatives to taking him to the vet every 28 days for the expensive shot and office fee - for roughly the next decade. I'm a nurse, can't I be shown the proper tech. to give him the IM and keep a vial at home, then take him in for blood monitoring as needed?

Optional Information:
Age: 3; Male; Breed: Westie Terrier

Newly diag. Addisons disease - looking for options

A lot depends on your vet. I'd discuss this with them. Depending on how controlled the med is you might have to pick it up monthly to use for your dog. My vet was willing to show me how to manage several supportive and care procedures at home so your vet may be willing to also. Lots of pet owners can't do it but asking is the best way to find out if your vet will work with you on this.
This site covers Addisons
http://www.marvistavet.com/html/addison_s_disease.html
and explains why blood monitoring is important as you regulate the dog and lists an oral treatment possibility too.
Hope this helps you!

I've spoken to my vet at length, my Westie was her first Addisons diagnosis and she's very unsure and uncomfortable with my becoming more involved with his care. So, if you have a resource for finding vets in my area who have experience in a specific disease like ours, I would appreciate that.
