thanks for your help our family has a chowhound mix who is

Sent to Pet Experts December 28, 2005 11:37 a.m.

Thanks for your help. Our family has a chow-hound mix who is 14 years old, she eats and drinks constantly, but still remains thinner than she should be. She also has difficulty getting up and sitting, she either has to stand or lay down. She can't hear unless we shout at her or flag her attention and has recently taken to snapping at us when she doesn't want to comply with staying inside rather than out where it is cold. We are taking her to the vet today, I was just wondering when is the best time to put an old dog to sleep? Appreciate your time.

My feeling is when the dog has no more good things it enjoys in its life then it may be time to part with it. I'm willing to put up with inconvenience or the expense of meds to make the dog feel better but I think its unfair if the dog has little or nothing good in its life anymore to keep it just to make myself feel better.
However it may be you would see a big change in your senior pet with some meds for arthritis and perhaps diabetes or Cushings disease either of which might be the eating and drinking issue.
For getting her attention a laser pointer with the light on the floor in front of her might work.
Do find out from the vet what her real problems are and see if you can help them. After that is the time to consider other options.
Hope this helps you!
