Question

i have a kitty who refuses to use her kitty box she will

Sent to Pet Experts December 24, 2005 1:41 p.m.

I have a kitty who refuses to use her kitty box. She will about 1/3 of the time. I keep the box clean for her becuase my last kitty was picky and would not use the box if it was too dirty. She always has a nice pile waiting for me in the same spot. I have tried everything to get her to stop. I have moved things to block the area.(she finds a new one) I have used sprays that are supposed to keep her away.(they dont seem to phase her) I have repeatedly had the catbox talk with her.(where I put her in the box and wait for her to go and then give her a treat) Every time she goes on the floor, I put her in her cat carrier and leave her there for a while...like time out...but she is 4 months old now...and she isnt showing any signs of stopping.I have never hit her and I dont want to...but my carpet is becomming eternally stained and she does not seem to be making any progress. PLEASE HELP!!!!! --stressed out mom

Clean the carpet with a cleaner that has enzymes to remove all odor such as Odor Mute, Simple Solution, Nature's Miracle etc.
Try putting a cat box in the favorite spot and slowly move it (no more than a foot a day) to an space you don't mind having the box.
Try a different type of litter - something that will feel more like the rug or put a thin layer of litter over a rug sample in a second litter box to see if that works.
You may find that she has a tummy problem - check her for parasites as that might make her need to go suddenly as could a food allergy/sensitivity. A change in food to a high quality one if you feed grocery store foods may help.
You might find Feliway cat appeasing pheromone helps. You can get it in pet supply stores and online.
You could buy or borrow a dog crate - a big wire one to set up as a cat condo so she has no choice but to use the litter box provided. Keep that up until she is habituated to that spot alone.
But do check for medical issues. Its not uncommon for a cat with parasites or food allergies to potty in places they should not.
Hope this helps you!
