Sent to Pet Experts November 30 04:46 PM

Our German Shepherd, aged 5, has had tonsilitis, and our vet put him on Ampicillin for 7 days, then another anti-biotic for 7 more days. Since then, he has had (I know this is gross) big strands of green/yellow snot coming out of his nose and he coughs constantly. Our vet said there is no more he can do. What would cause this? It has been going on for 6 weeks now - steady hacking cough and snotty nose. Any ideas?

Optional Information:
Age: 5; Male; Breed: German Shepherd

Already Tried:
Ampicillin 500 mgs. 4 times a day and another anti-biotic - same amt.

I think you need to have your vet culture the nasal discharge to find out if this is a bacterial or fungal infection and which antibiotic or antifungal will work on it.
If your vet cannot help you then ask for a referral to a specialist in internal medicine or other specialist who may be able to help more.
If your pet was recently in the southwest or California before this began it could be Valley Fever which is a fungal disease but there are others too.

With the coughing and nasal discharge culturing the infection is the best bet to finding what is really wrong and how best to treat it.
Hope this helps you!
