My mini doxie was bred on September 23. Her nipples are now prominent. Could this breeding have taken or is there other signs I need to look at?

If she was recently bred, this is a good sign.

Gestation for a dog is around 63 days so you should count forward from the date of conception and this will let you know when to expect puppies.

This early in the pregnancy, you would not be able to feel puppies in the abdomen.

At around 30 days gestation, a practiced hand can feel movement and fetal sacks.

If you have not seen the vet for a general exam and deworming, this would be a good time to do so.

Also, around 55 days gestation, you will need to see the vet for an x-ray to determine whether or not she needs a c-section (common in this breed!) or if she can deliver them on her own. This will also tell you how many puppies to expect.

After that visit, the best way to predict delivery is to take the dog's temperature. When the rectal temp drops below 100 degrees, you can expect puppies within 24 hours.

Let me know if you have more questions about this.

Good luck!

Reply to Tammy Falkner's Post: Is the swollen "boobs" a sign or is this just because she is older. She was in the last stage of heat when this happened. What are the very early signs that she is or isn't? I want to make sure I give her extra care if in fact she is pregnant. I could never really feel her boobs before but now, almost two weeks after being bred, they are very noticeble. Thanks for your reply.

You will see the breasts enlarge with pregnancy so this could be a sign. In the coming weeks, you will also see her moods change and her sides thicken.

Keep track of the days because you will need to follow the directions above in regards to x-rays, etc.

This would be a good time to see the vet for a deworming and health check so that you can ensure the health of mom and puppies.

Let me know if you still have questions.

Reply to Tammy Falkner's Post: Thank you. She has monthly visits to the vet right now to make sure all has been well. I count that she would be due the week of Thanksgiving.

As for her moods, she seems to want more attention but I thought that it was too early to actually have that happen. I just was unsure as to how soon after being bred, the signs would show.

She get vitamins twice a day and puppy food. She will be going back to the vet next Monday. How soon would they start to gain wieght and when would that show?

Thanks for all your support. I am just a really concerned pet owner. She is like a part of the family.
