Question

Can I ask a question of a specialist nasal surgeon?

Sent to Pet Experts September 10, 2005 2:13 p.m.

I have been told that my dog's tendancy to have irregular polyps and that we need to do a surgery on her. The surgery sounds very serious and, since she is 10-ys-0ld (going on 3yrs), I am concerned about the extent of the work which needs to be done.

Hey Customer (name blocked for privacy), how are you doing?

Nasal polyps are defined as a projecting mass of swollen and hypertrophied or tumorous membrane. According to The Society of Endovascular Veterinary Surgery, just as tumors, these polyps have a tendency to become so large that breathing for your pet can become difficult and life threatening in such a short time. However, surgical procedures can have significant complications, therefore it is up to you to balance the risks.

Best wishes,

I REALIZE THAT A SURGERY MAY BE NECESSARY. HOWEVER, I WANTED TO ASK A SURGEON WHAT CHOICES OF TYPE OF SURGERY WE HAVE. I KNOW OF ONE PROCEDURE OF OPENING THE NOSE AND CLEANING OUT THE POLYPS. HOWEVER, THAT IS EXTREMELY HARD ON THE DOG AND IS A LONG RECOVERY. WHAT ARE OTHER ALTERNATIVES?

Have they been able to do a biopsy or nasal flush to make sure the growths are not cancerous? Also testing for an underlying cause such as a fungal disease? What diagnostics have been done?
