(Not a Pet Question?)

How can I, myself, take care of my Pug's anal glands?
Sent to Pet Experts August 25 10:57 PM

The vet mentioned Pumpkin pie filling mixed in with his food or green beans but he doesn't like either. How do I prevent this from happening again and what can I do to make him feel comfortable?

This site will show you how the anal glands work and how to empty them.

Ask your vet about using metamucil for the fiber for your dog (you'll want the right dose for your pet from your vet).
If he won't eat the pumpkin plain you can also try adding a little sugar to it to see if that works to make it interesting to him.
Be aware that in some dogs surgical removal of the anal glands leaves the dog with fecal incontinence. Its much easier to learn how to express them yourself than to cope with that.
If you do get any anal gland fluids on you its easy to clean off using an enzyme type cleaner such as Nature's Miracle or Simple Solution.
Hope this helps you!

Several answers:

In most dogs it is not possible to prevent the anal glands from needing to be expressed repetedly. In some dogs they just seem to get overful and uncomfortable. We really don't understand exactly how and why these glands are supposed to work. The options are to express them on a regular basis (usually when your dog starts "scooting" his bottom on the ground). For some dogs with severe problems we will surgically remove the anal glands.

1. Yes some people will learn how to empty their own dog's anal glands. Some dogs you can do this just from the outside only, if you need to reach inside the rectum then you probably want to buy some latex exam gloves. The best time to do this is either outside or in the tub before bathing (really stinky stuff)

2. Yes sometimes fiber helps

3. Sometimes other issues like allergies or infections can cause the anal glands to overproduce.

If this is the first time, then see how long it takes between expressions. If you ever notice that the consistency/smell of the anal gland changes or they become swollen, painful or hard to express contact your Vet as anal glands can become infected.

If you have to express more than once a month then there is more likely to be an underlying medical problem.

Good luck,
Dr. Bailey
