Sent to Pet Experts July 10, 2005 1:58 p.m.

9 year old indoor cat has allergies. itchy, watery eyes in spring and summer. allergy testing not affordable. NOT conjunctivitis or anything like that as vet tried treating for this and failed. this has been going on for 3 years now and cat is otherwise very healthy. ? use of benadryl and dosing for this to ease itchiness of eyes? cat weighs about 11 pounds.

I would not use banadryl in a cat this age without the advice of a vet. Most OTC medications are not safe for cats. If your cat needs an antihistamine, your vet can prescribe one that is more effective.

You might also consider a dietary change to one that is low allergen. You can get a good product by prescription from your vet and most pet food stores sell alteratives.

Allergy problems can also be exacerbated by fleas and other products so be sure to get the cat started on a prescription flea preventative and keep the home dust free, pollen free, etc. Hepafilters can help with this.

You can also flush the eyes with saline every day to help with tearing and irritation.

I hope this helps!

Let me know if you still have questions.
