Sent to Pet Experts July 06, 2005 11:52 a.m.

If a dogs bowel has perforated and there's feces
throughout the abdomen, what are the chances of
survival? (the dog has advanced cancer involving the
stomach, liver, and other organs)

ACCEPTED Check Mark

If you are only facing the perforated bowel and fecal seepage, the chances are still pretty good. When you add the cancer, in though, it gets a little iffy.

If you need advice on when to stop treatment and euthanasia, please let me know. I would be happy to tell you what I know.

But, all in all, recovery rates are pretty good after a bowel problem such as the one you have described.

Let me know if you still have questions.

The dog in question has suffered a cardiac arrest
following the surgery and one more the next day.
