New Litter Box Problems

Sent to Pet Experts May 30 03:53 PM

My 11 year old cat has started peeing outside his litter box. No new drama in his life. About a month ago his litter went too long in between changes and he peed on a plastic toy of my son's. Now today, he peed on a plastic computer cover that was on the floor (different spot than the toy was). He's never had problems going in his box before. Is this an indication of a problem or a preoccupation with plastic?

Could be a urinary tract infection problem could be the smell of the plastic. Some plastics are made with urea and may smell 'interesting' to a cat.
You might try cleaning the areas that got peed on with a product that removes odors using enxymes such as Simple Solution or Natures Miracle etc.
You might want the vet to check him for a urinary tract infection.
You might want to try putting up a second litter box in a different location so he has a choice of spots to use.
If it is just behavioral then you might find the cat appeasing pheromones in Feliway will work for you. You can buy this product online or through pet supply stores.
Hope this helps you!

Reply to Nancy Holmes's Post: Thanks for your help. He hasn't done it again since we removed the plastic, so I'm thinking it was just the plastic. His litter pan is only a couple of feet away from where he was going, so I don't think location was the problem. He hasn't exhibited any other signs of a urinary tract infection so it probably isn't that either.

Thanks for your insight!
