3 month old shih tzu with fractured ribs
Sent to Pet Experts May 16 01:24 AM

What is the best way to care for a 3 lb. shih tzu with 3 fractured ribs. It happened on Friday night and I took him to the vet for xrays which confirmed that he had 1-3 right sided fractured ribs. His respirations are shallow but within normal range. He also has some pulmonary contusions and some alveolar bleeding was noted. I know that he needs to be on bedrest for at least 4 weeks, as little exertion and handling as possible. He was also prescribed Deramaxx 1/4 tab every 24 hours for pain, which seems to help, but I think it also masks his pain so he is anxious to be active plus he is only 3 1/2 months old. I stepped on him accidentally and I am just so upset. I have been checking his gums and they are nice and pink. His respiratory rate is between 48 (at rest) and into the 70's with mild exertion. Is there anything else I can do, also he has a follow up vet appt on Tuesday. Thank you and please help me
