I recently just lost a pet, due to something, not parvo but it was sudden. I have had animals die with parvo before, their was no vomiting, or diarea or anything. He was still drinking fluids just acting sluggish. Well I have a female that just had puppies and I am wondering if their is something I could give or feed her to boast her immune system. Both dogs are up to date on shots.

How old was the pet that suddenly died after being sluggish? Had he been vaccinated? When did your last dog die with parvo?

Reply to Tammy-Moderator's Post: My dog that just recently died would have been 2 in January. He was completely up to date on his shots. The last incident we had with parvo was 4 years ago. The dog that lived here has been here for almost 2 years.

There can be a lot of causes for lethargy. The most common one (and most overlooked) is a parasite problem. It can rob the body of nutrition, dehydrate the dog and cause death if left untreated.

A urinary blockage is also a likely culprit.

Intestinal obstructions or even a general virus can cause death if left untreated.

I wish that I could give you a more definitive idea but there are just too many to consider.

You are correct in that you don't normally see parvo in a dog this age.

The only way to find out for sure what the cause of death was is to see the vet for a necropsy (pet autopsy).

Let me know if you still have questions.

And I am very sorry for your loss.

I would go ahead and switch her over to a high quality puppy food. This will help a lot. And you can start her on some prenatal vitamins that you can get at the pet store but it's really not necessary if she is eating well.
