Question

continuous blood in stool

Sent to Pet Experts August 17, 2005 10:26 p.m.

Our new puppy was previously diagnosed with Coccidia (sp?) and she took the medicine for the 2 weeks and then the vet said the parasite was all gone. However, she was still having blood in her stool and the stool smelled really bad. They said this was due to bacteria in her intestines and that if we fed her some pumpkin with each of her meals that this would go away. It has now been a week of feeding her pumpkin and the blood in her stools may have even gotten worse. When we're out on walks she'll try to have a bowel movement 6 or 7 times and sometimes she is just pushing out blood. Please help, we're really concerned.

Did the vet do a parvo test?

No they did not but she has received one vaccine with parvo in it. They haven't given her the next shot in the series because she was on the antibiotics. I guess what I've heard and read about Parvo I would expect our puppy to be less active and seem more sick. But, we're new to the puppy world so maybe what we think is her regular amount of sleeping is really more than normal sleep.

Can parvo cause her to need to have bowel movements frequently? She's good about going to the door to relieve herself but she usually wants to have a bowel movement each time as well. If we can keep her from having a bowel movement for a couple of times then her stool is much more solid. It seemed on the walk tonight that it had really gotten bad. I just started feeding her some new homemade treats as well. I heard Boxer's digestive systems can be really tempermental. What are the chances that the loose stools are due to a lack of fiber and frequent stools which is thus causing the irritation and bleeding? I have to say that the blood isn't within the stool. It is bright blood either right at the beginning of the stool or at the end with a couple drops of bright red blood. This tells me that it isn't traveling all the way through her system. Is there a way we can slow her down and see if that helps any? I know this is a weird comparison but my husband has IBS and it kind of reminds us of that condition just without the blood. I look forward to your response. Thanks.

Were you able to return to the vet for a repeat fecal exam today?

And, yes, pets can suffer from IBS as well.

Boxers DO have temperamental stomachs and often need a food that is free of fillers and additives. Your vet can help you pick a food that will benefit your pet.

If you recently changed her food or gave table scraps, the diarrhea and irritation is all part of the intestinal adjustments that must take place.

Let me know if you still have questions.

We did return to the vet for a third fecal exam. It was determined with further tests that she actually has Giardia and some unhealthy looking Coccidia cells. So she's on meds for the Giardia and things look better already. So we might actually have it figured out now. She's also back on the Coccidia meds just in case.
