Well we do not have an avian vet even close to our area so i am trying to figure out how to help him. I did as you suggested...removed the grit, the millet and tried to expose him to some greens and fruit. He will have no part of the fruit and greens yet. What troubles me is the leg......he still cannot use it and while it does not look as though it is causing him any pain and he gets around ok....but the leg is turning black. His other leg is a light shade of blue which looks and works normally..he is not as vocal and spends quite some time sleeping on the bottom of the cage.He actually leans his head against the cage for support. He still eats and drinks fine and is still happy to see us......i am wondering if something has shut off the blood flow to that leg and what if anything can be done for it.

You are right, there are not any real close to you, that I could find. However, that's not unusual. They can be few and far between. That's just something we bird owners sometimes have to put up with in order to get our birds the care they need. The closest ones I can find to your location are both in Palm Springs.

Desert Animal Hospital 4299 East Romon Road 760-778-9999

and,

Animal Medical Hospital, 606 Oleander Road. 760-327-1356

I would give anything if there was something you might be able to do about this at home. There is not. If this goes on without help, he is going to lose the leg and die. It's not even possible to say which will come first. With the circulation cut off that badly, he is in pain. The fact that he is doing his best to act normal is nothing more than instinct. He is going to "bite the bullet" and hide his pain and discomfort from you for as long as he possible can. Do not be fooled by the fact that he is still able show happiness at seeing you and he is still, for now, eating and drinkng. None of those is going to last much longer. He will soon be feeling so bad he will stop eating and drinking. He is looking to you for the help he needs because you have provided him with what he needsd for all this time. He has no one to turn to but you. I so hate it when I have little to tell folks other than bad news but, it is what it is and if you are not able to get him to a proper vet asap, he is going to die. I'm so sorry for the both of you. If there is some other town closer that you would like me to search for you, I'll be glad to try. You can also call the vets I lised above, and call all the vets in your area. Ask them who they recommend, closest to you, for bird problems. Just because a vet is not listed as an Avian vet does not mean there is no help available. Please, at least call your local vets and ask them where they send their bird owning clients. Don't put it off any longer. Let me know if I can help with anything else. Patricia
