My brother-in-law just passed away and had owned a Macaw parrot for 25 years since it was a baby. We live in Cleveland,OH and he lived in Miami (Surfside) Fla. We are trying to find an aviary, rescue pets or zoo. Can you give me any suggestions? We are desparate. His neighbor has been feeding him but no longer wants to do it and the Macaw is becoming distructive.

Hello Leigh. Oh no, this is so unfortunate for everyone. I'm so sorry for you loss and for the bird's loss. Birds form very strong attachments to their owners and a bond of 25 years is a long one. This is very hard on the bird, especially if he has no way to actually know his human is gone. Without the proper interaction right away, from someone who really knows what they are doing, he is only going to get worse. He may even resort to mutilating himself. I hope the neighbor was familiar enough with you BIL and with the bird to know how to feed him properly. There are two possible solutions I can suggest. Neither of them would be my first choice for where I'd want my birds to go if I were gone but either one may be a much better alternative than what is going on right now. One would be to contact Parrot Jungle in Miami. Another option is to contact Jenifer at the World Parrot Mission in Key Largo. Click here: WorldParrotMission.org - World Parrot Mission Helping Homeless, Helpless Parrots - Happy Feathers Gift Shop - Secu I don't know whether she is still taking in parrots or not at the current moment but if nothing else, she may be able to direct them to someone who is nearby. If I were closer, I try to see if there was anything I could do for this poor bird but I'm up near Tampa. They do need to act as quickly as possible though because this bird is grieving for his human, just the same as any human grieves for another. In fact it is worse for him because in his eyes, he has been abandoned by the only person he loved and he has no idea why. He needs to go with someone who really knows what to do for him and how to handle him. To just let "anyone" have him, especially without them also being aware of all the "baggage" he is coming with would be true cruelty to the bird. I hope this will help and I hope they can quickly find a suitable situation for him. Please let me know if there is anything else I might be able to do for you or for them, or to help them with the bird until arrangements can be made. I'll keep the poor guy in my thoughts. Patricia
