Sent to Pet Experts April 13, 2006 11:40 p.m.

my friend gave me a blue parakeet recently, this parakeet has started plucking its feathers. I got her a mate (male blue parakeet) a few days ago and has decrease her feather plucking, but has been scratching herself. I have gotten the right mix of foods and calcium, can the scratching be a sign of flies. I 've never had birds before
Thank you,
Ivette

If your bird is scratching, it could be a symptom of mites. This usually requires injections of ivermectin to clear the infection. If it continues to go untreated, it can also cause problems with the beak (the beak will start to become deformed and it will make it ver difficult for him to eat. Your pet should be seen by a vet who specializes in birds. best of luck to you
