hair loss

I noticed that my outside cat has been matting up real bad and now he is losing heavy chunks of hair and is bald on the side of his neck. its unseasonably warm here in MT. What could cause this? Mange? Otherwise they are healthy. They are about 1.5 years old. Help. I dont want my dogs to get it.
