Question

Chorioptic mange mite on horse's legs. Please advise ASAP

Sent to Pet Experts August 25, 2005 7:05 a.m.

My horse has picked up a parasite on its legs 2 days ago on a trail ride. My neighbor said it is tick larva or mites. It looks like dried sap on raised "bites". The itching is causing him to chew and kick at his legs. I remove the "sap" with medicated shampoo the hair came out with the "sap". I think it is Chorioptic mange mite but I don't know how to best treat it and ease the itching. Please advise.

I think the multi pronged approach has the best results - ivermectin and frontline spray and cleaning the stable area so that no reinfection happens.
